  • General Choi Woonsan (1885-1945) is a hidden hero in the history of the armed independence struggle in Korea.
    General Choi Woonsan was the actual leader who established the Independence Army units, ‘Daehan Gunmudodokbu’ and ‘Daehan Bukrodokgunbu’ and co-established ‘Daehan Bukrogunjeongseo’
    He led the Battle of Bongodong and the Battle of Cheongsan-ri, the shining torches of the independence war history at the forefront.
    Nevertheless, only a small part of General Choi's self-sacrificing deeds and activities based on sublime love and loyalty to his country during the desperate colonial period is known.
    Therefore, it is essential task to study and review his achievements in the history of the independence struggle against Japanese colonial rule.
  • General Choi Woonsan, who was born in Yanji, Gando, waged an armed struggle with his older brother General Choi Jin-dong and younger brother General Chi-heung and fought against the atrocities of the Japanese imperialists who violated national sovereignty through the Eulsa Treaty.
    He decided to sacrifice his life and all his possessions for the restoration of national sovereignty, and moved to Bongodong in 1910 to build a village for his compatriots and a base for the military power.
  • General Choi Woonsan prepared for an armed independence war by gathering soldiers from the Chinese army, mobilizing patriotic youth, forming the self-defense force, and establishing the Bongodong Military Academy to provide military training and cultivate a spirit of independence.
  • In line with the declaration of the Republic of Korea as a sovereign country to the world through the March 1st Movement in 1919 and the establishment of the Provisional Government in Shanghai, General Choi Woon-san established the Korean Military Army, ‘Daehan Gunmudodokbu’, with the self-defense force of 670 soldiers trained since 1910. He and his older brother, General Choi Jin-dong who had been appointed as commander-in-chief declared war against Japan.In addition, General Choi Woon-san provided Seodaepa, Wangcheong-hyeon, which he owned, as a base for the Bukrogunjeongseo and supported the establishment of the Bukrogunjeongseo by providing military funds such as food and weapons.
  • In 1920, he led the establishment of the integrated Independence Army, ‘Daehan Bukrodokgunbu’ by taking responsibility for weapons and armaments to integrate scattered independence groups.The Battle of Bongodong and the Battle of Cheongsan-ri in 1920 are a war of independence that declared our will for independence to the world, and a shining symbol of national self-determination prepared and achieved with the strength of our people along with the sacrifice and efforts of General Choi woonsan.
  • Although after a crushing defeat at the Battle of Bongodong, the Japanese imperialists destroyed Bongodong's house and the independence military base in retaliation, and General Choi's family also suffered hardships, General Choi woonsan and his brothers' will for independence did not decline.
  • Nevertheless, there are many people who do not even know the existence of General Choi until now, even after a century has passed.
    The future of a nation that forgets history or does not find lessons from history is bleak.
    The “General Choi Woonsan Commemorative Association” seeks to honor and pass down the life of General Choi, who chose and practiced a noble life for the nation rather than himself.
    Taking his life as a model, he inspires patriotism in today's society that seeks only his own safety,
    He will take the lead in reviving the community spirit he had and taking interest in his coexistent life.
